About Kolovesi National Park

Kolovesi National Park occupies a unique landscape characterized by rugged granite cliffs, deep bays, and labyrinth-like waterways along Lake Saimaa. Established in 1990, the park protects one of the best habitats for the endangered Saimaa ringed seal, Finland’s only freshwater seal species. The park features vast old-growth forests, uninhabited islands, and tranquil water routes that provide an immersive natural experience. Popular among paddlers, it offers some of the finest canoeing and kayaking opportunities in Finland, with well-marked routes winding through narrow straits and peaceful inlets. The lake’s clear, clean waters create an ideal environment not only for aquatic life but also for fishing. Hikers can explore limited trails and reach lookout points that provide sweeping views of the rocky landscapes and dense boreal forests. Wildlife includes rare birds such as the black-throated diver and elusive mammals like otters and beavers. Kolovesi's rugged beauty and quiet solitude attract visitors seeking nature, birdwatching, fishing, and late-summer camping on remote islands. Due to its fragile ecosystem and seal population, visitors are encouraged to minimize disturbance while enjoying the natural surroundings. Seasonal changes bring contrasting experiences—from vibrant summer greenery and calm paddling days to snowy, frozen lakes in winter. The park’s location near the town of Savonlinna also makes it accessible to travelers exploring the region’s broader outdoor and cultural attractions.
